what causes the tips of tomatoes to turn purple and then yellow with prominent veins after flowers appear and a few have started to set?

It sounds as if the flowering nutient you are using has a lack of magnesium in it and nitrogen. Lack of magnesium will cause purpling while yellowing is generally a lack of nitrogen. When you are in flowering you don't want to take all the nitrogen away, they still have a lot of growing to do.
